How to check if your resume is ATS friendly before you apply
An ATS check is most useful when it compares your resume with one real job description. The goal is not to chase a perfect number. It is to make sure the document is readable, relevant, and truthful before a recruiter sees it.
Start with a real job description
A resume is not ATS friendly in isolation. A clear Product Manager resume may still miss the tools, domain language, or seniority signals requested for a particular role.
Paste the complete listing, including responsibilities and requirements. This gives you a practical reference point for job title alignment, skills, qualifications, and recurring language.
Check whether the document can be read clearly
Use standard section headings such as Experience, Education, Skills, and Certifications. Keep dates consistent and make contact details easy to find in the document body.
Avoid relying on text embedded in images, decorative tables, or a layout where the reading order is unclear. A clean single-column structure is usually the safest choice when compatibility matters.
Use a readable PDF, DOCX, or text document
Keep role title, employer, and dates together
Use headings a recruiter will recognise
Check that text can be selected and copied from your PDF
Review missing language with judgement
A missing keyword is a prompt to investigate, not permission to add it. Include a tool, skill, or qualification only when you can explain where and how you used it.
If a requirement is genuinely missing, decide whether to address it in a cover letter, develop it, or focus on roles that are a closer fit. Honest relevance will age better than keyword stuffing.
